Chr. regierte.

<p>Wegen der Verlegung der Hauptstadt (und damit der Archive) von <a href="%E1%B8%AAattu%C5%A1a" title="Ḫattuša">Ḫattuša</a> nach <a href="Tar%E1%B8%ABunta%C5%A1%C5%A1a" title="Tarḫuntašša">Tarḫuntašša</a> (in Süd<a href="Anatolien" class="mw-redirect" title="Anatolien">anatolien</a>) liegen bisher nur wenige Dokumente aus der Zeit Muwattallis vor. Das einzige sicher auf ihn zu beziehende Felsrelief, das ihn auch selbst zeigt, befindet sich nahe der <a href="Kilikien" title="Kilikien">kilikischen</a> Küste in <a href="Sirkeli_H%C3%B6y%C3%BCk" title="Sirkeli Höyük">Sirkeli Höyük</a>.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Leben">Leben</h2></div>

<p>Muwattalli war der Sohn des Großkönigs <a href="Mur%C5%A1ili_II." title="Muršili II.">Muršili II.</a> und folgte diesem nach dessen Tod auf den Thron, wobei keine Unruhen überliefert sind. Gegen Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. waren die Hethiter in mehrere Konflikte mit den <a href="Altes_%C3%84gypten" title="Altes Ägypten">Ägyptern</a> verwickelt. Beide Großmächte kämpften darum, <a href="Syrien" title="Syrien">Syrien</a> zu kontrollieren. Dies führte unter König Muwattalli zum Krieg mit dem ägyptischen Pharao <a href="Ramses_II." title="Ramses II.">Ramses II</a>, der <a href="Amurru_(Staat)" title="Amurru (Staat)">Amurru</a>, das zuvor hethitischer Vasall gewesen war, zum Abfall bewegte und gegen die Hethiter unterstützte. Da die <a href="Schlacht_bei_Kadesch" title="Schlacht bei Kadesch">Schlacht bei Kadesch</a> 1274 v. Chr. keine eindeutige Entscheidung bringen konnte, schloss Muwattallis Bruder <a href="%E1%B8%AAattu%C5%A1ili_III." title="Ḫattušili III.">Ḫattušili III.</a> 1259 v. Chr. einen <a href="%C3%84gyptisch-Hethitischer_Friedensvertrag" title="Ägyptisch-Hethitischer Friedensvertrag">Friedensvertrag mit Ägypten</a>. Freundschaftliche Beziehungen zwischen Hethitern und Ägyptern wurden darin beschlossen.

</p><p>Muwattalli verlegte die Hauptstadt des Hethiterreiches vorübergehend von <a href="%E1%B8%AAattu%C5%A1a" title="Ḫattuša">Ḫattuša</a> nach Tarḫuntašša, wofür möglicherweise die unangenehme Nähe Ḫattušas zu den <a href="Ka%C5%A1k%C3%A4er" title="Kaškäer">Kaškäern</a> im Norden oder aber die besseren Möglichkeiten zur Kontrolle der südlichen Vizekönigreiche ausschlaggebend waren.<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Sein Nachfolger <a href="Mur%C5%A1ili_III." title="Muršili III.">Muršili III.</a> führte die Hauptstadt wieder zurück.

</p><p>Für seinen Bruder Hattusili richtete er ein Vizekönigreich in der nördlichen Grenzstadt <a href="%E1%B8%AAakpi%C5%A1" class="mw-redirect" title="Ḫakpiš">Ḫakpiš</a> ein.

</p><p>Außerdem schloss Muwattalli einen Vertrag mit <a href="Alaksandu" title="Alaksandu">Alakšandu</a> von <a href="Wilu%C5%A1a" title="Wiluša">Wiluša</a>, welches oft in der <a href="Troas" title="Troas">Troas</a> lokalisiert und mit dem <a href="Homer" title="Homer">homerischen</a> <a href="Ilios" class="mw-redirect" title="Ilios">Ilios</a> gleichgesetzt wird. Hierin unterwirft sich Alaksandu den Hethitern, wofür diese ihm und seinen Nachkommen Schutz zusichern. Es handelt sich hierbei wohl um eine Erweiterung des Bündnissystems Muršilis II. in Westkleinasien und wurde möglicherweise auch zum Schutz gegen den hethitischen Staatsfeind <a href="Piyamaradu" title="Piyamaradu">Piyamaradu</a> begründet. Schlecht erhaltene Dokumente bezeugen auch Kontakte zu den <a href="Assyrisches_Reich" title="Assyrisches Reich">assyrischen</a> Herrschern.
